Purpose of Memory

Real Live Painting-Leora & Paul  oil on canvas  193.3x112.1cm  2016

. “Live Painting” consists of two aspect; painting as performance and the final result of documenting what is going on the other side of the world simultaneously. People in somewhere on the planet capture their every day life through online on live and thousands of random people watch their routines at the same time. I set a projector and have the live video projected on a canvas to paint. As the screen shows what is happening on the other side, I bring the imagery on canvas spontaneously as people on the website move.
In my current project “ The Purpose of Memory :The Live Painting”, I capture someone’s private life that they intentionally expose on a public website. Every moment become a memory immediately and the memories that are projected on canvas. As I see the memories on the canvas, I perform to paint to capture these memories of moments that are combined with my own interpretation.

Purpose of Memory: Connecting the Past with the Present

Memory consistently lets us confirm that we are who we are, and is a continuity of consciousness allowing us to know that we existed yesterday and will tomorrow too. This continuity of consciousness lets us be certain that we currently exist. In addition, memory is independent from our body, which lives in the physical space and time. Given that what makes ‘I’ be defined is memory’s continuous consciousness and the body containing the consciousness within it, while the body keeps changing physically, memory (consciousness) turns all physical time and space into a single lump, repeating the imaging of oblivion. Rather than proving the past, memory plays a more important role in explaining the present. It does not disappear into oblivion but is absorbed into another memory or flows into unconsciousness. Thus, the memories explaining today’s me are things that protrude most pointedly and sharply in the lump of memory. The moment when the spiky tip of a cone turned upside down is touched is a memory illustrating the present. And the tip soon becomes blunt, leaving sharper memories to dwell in its place. In this way, memory is soaked to a huge world of memories (consciousness).

The artist Jung Goyona seeks a methodology of thinking through the act of painting. The word, creating, may express this more properly than the word, seeking. She reproduces objects or scenes she meets in daily life as a methodology of thinking; rather than explaining an object in detail, she describes her memory (consciousness) in the hidden side of the object. Of the scenes and objects she encounters every moment, she stops before those that touch her consciousness. Whether or not her memory associated with the object or scene is clear, she portrays the flow of her thoughts, neither excessively nor sparingly. As one of the diverse methodologies of thinking, this time she seeks the purpose of memory. As a tunnel connecting the past and present, one’s memory is a mixture of one’s relationships with others. In other words, it is a mixture of my memory and the memory of me. Looking into a mixed memory, she may be more deeply contemplating on her surroundings.

Like an object contained on photographic paper by pushing the shutter of a camera, Jung’s eye stops in front of a scene that stimulates her memory and sensitivity: a playground she would have glanced while walking past at midnight, a scooter standing in the light of a street lamp in an alley, the back of a woman standing under illumination, and plant pots arranged nonchalantly. These are very common scenes we can often see in our daily lives. Then, what kinds of our memories are mixed in these scenes that Jung is drawn to? What is the purpose of her memory unfolding through these scenes?

A playground at night feels melancholic and unstable; it might incur the memory of a secret first kiss with one’s first love or a sad memory of an adolescence suffering from growing pains. Like other people, one might have a memory in which while one was waiting for the owner of a scooter, he/she had already entered his/her home for a moment when one was away from the place. And one might have a memory in which they were consoled by plant pots that have lost their owner, or a memory in which they were startled when they happened to see someone’s back and ran to see their face. The objects described by Jung are memories of ordinary daily life. However, there are parts in which her memories are slightly different from ours. She has a good sense of space in terms of filling a canvas in full. She also excellently uses blank space on the canvas. And she shows her persistence of storytelling on memory. For this, her brushstroke maintains a tension that may feel careless but is sharp. Her painting connects each of us using the medium of memory. At this point, her methodology of thinking becomes visualized. Memory is a type of stimulation. It always stirs us to think and react to an object. It is also memory’s job to make us perceive the other as an independently thinking entity. On the other hand, all memories in our consciousness create a basis that can distinguish you from me. In addition, we can communicate with each other through memories, and can feel that we are mentally linked to someone, like the root of a plant. It seems that through her formative language, that is, her methodology of thinking, she researches the source of a memory in this way, rather than simply seeking its purpose. She starts to make a painting the moment an artistic motive contained in normal daily life is connected with a memorya hint that allows us to trace her flow of thought. She also then starts to seriously ponder over when she must stop.

All memory defines the existence of both you and me. If the purpose of memory encourages us to take time to reflect on our lives, when we follow Jung’s memories and her methodology to express memory, we may understand this moment more widely and deeply, as if the stormy emotional stirrings of our memories became calm (Written by Im Dae-sik(director of Atertain)).
